    Tag leute,

    7-9pm was auch immer ..

Three months before departure, Pete Measley sent around a checklist of equipment, a checklist of drugs and medicine we should bring with us, and a guidance booklet on the boat, the layout of the boat, and a general rough idea as to the plan of the trip.
I departed Frankfurt on Wednesday evening 26 June, in order to meet the boat in Kwajelin on Friday 28 June.
My flights out where: Frankfurt, Hong Kong, Manilla (with a 4 hour stop over, which included me having to pick up my bags, having to recheck back in, and convincing the departure tax people that i am stopover and had only been in Manilla for 30minutes), Guam, Truk, Phonpei, Kosrae, Kwajelin. Manilla airport being definatly the worst airport out of all of them, but, Guam the most expensive, with nothing purchaseable under 50usd, but at least it had high speed internet in the "pub / bar". I then met most of the others at Truk, as most hadly already completed two weeks of diving there first. Total Travel time was 34 hours.
My hand lugguage was @20kg's, containing mostly Open Circuit dive equipment, torches, computers etc, my check in lugguage comprised 16kg's of everything else, plus a lot of drugs and medicine, and spares.
At Kwajelin, we arrived at the army base, were briefed by the military and were then escorted to the baggage "shed". Some of Pete Measleys sorb supply having found to be still on the plane, after a manic 30minutes, everything was sorted, and we were escorted of the base to the ferry pier. On arriving at the ferry pier, we expected to see our boat, but it was not there. After lots of sat telephone calls and coastguard liason, we discovered that the boat was moored at Ebi, a neighbouring island. So, we got on the ferry and headed over. At this point i realised that i was the only person who did not have excess baggage. Some of the group having brought with them not just one huge suitcase, but two huge suitcases, plus backpacks, plus hand luggage. It was also obvious that this was the trip of a lifetime for most people, as the sheer number of new underwater cameras, expensive electrical items and new dive gear was a site to behold.
At the boat, we loaded up, with people getting their basic dive gear ready for the following morning. The huge suitcases / crates, where then loaded into the cargo hold.
We then had our first drinks of the trip, talked with each other, got briefed as to how the trip would run and how we are to manage incidents. After internal discussion, we identified that we had an A&E doctor on board, as well as a Hyperbaric doctor. After further discussion between ourselves, and discussion as to how previous trips had run, we agreed that all OC divers (6 of us), would do 10minutes more decompression stops per dive than our computers said, and the rebreather boys would do 20minutes.

The equipment the boat had available was as follows:
steel 55cufts - for Nitrox 80-90% (no higher % could be obtained, and accuracy was +/-5%)
Ali 80's (limited number) - for 50% or for the Rebreathers Trimix bailout
    Inspo cylinders
Several spare sets of regs, bcd's, fins and masks
General spares, although limited in any "special" spares or tools

The next day we dived the Prinz Eugen.... To say this was a wow dive is a massive understatement. Visibility was 30m+, water temp was 28c. The size of the battle ship was awe inspiring. the amount of penetration possible on this wreck was jaw dropping, and the depth was nice. Max depth 35(ish)m and its propellers stuck out the water. We did two dives on this wreck, and i would happilly spend 5 days diving her.

The last of the crew and the fellow divers, arrived in the evening on the Saturday. One of these divers without his rebreather, which had somehow not made it through to Kwajelin. We departed for Bikini in the evening.

After 30ish hours of HUGE swell & waves, where most people just choose to stay in their bunks and tried to sleep through it (force 7-8 at times), we arrived at Bikini. The crew informed ourselves that this had been the second worst conditions that boat had ever been in, and normally the trip over to Bikini was smooth as.

Our days in Bikini then slipped into the following:

7am, clean, check gasses, have breakfast.
8am start to get ready for a dive
8.30am in the water on a battleship or deep wreck
11am back on board, mid morning snacks
    1pm check gasses again
    2pm get ready
2.30pm in the water again, on a shallow wreck or the Saratoga aircraft carrier
    4pm out the water
4-6pm either fishing from the dinghi, sleeping or looking at pictures
6pm Dinner (or BBQ on Bikini)
    7-9pm whatever..
    9pm most people in bed
9-11pm, either film or playstation or talking or whatever
    11pm everyone is in bed

The conduct of the dives is as follows:

    1. Morning wrecks are shotted, afternoon wrecks are "tied in" to preset shot lines
    2. Trapeze set either under the dingy for the morning dives, or under the boat for the afternoon dives
    3. The high steel deco mixes are either fixed to the trapeze, or people can carry them if they wish
    4. Rebreather divers in first
    5. OC second
    6. Free to go wherever you want in y buddy pair, but if you plan to penetrate an area, that area is communicated and discussed between the group before the dive
    7. Most people drop their 50%'s at the shot line, picking up on the way back. A spare 50% is left at the shot line, and is brought up by the last people back.

The wrecks themselves are awesome.. Some have amazing penetration, some have limited penetration, but all are simply magnificantly huge and impressive. All still have shells, and ammunition, and tables and chairs and pots and pans etc. To give an idea of scale, it takes 30minutes to swim the length of the Saratoga, it takes 10 minutes to swim from the bridge of the Nagato to the bow, 15minutes to the stern. There is not so much see life however, apart from sea whips and fish. In total we only saw @10 reef sharks in the whole trip.

Food on board was excellent, and the quote used by everyone was "this is the healthiest and best food we've ever had on a live aboard" . There was no shortage of beer, cocacola, gaterade or water. But there was only a limited supply of wine, and no spirits.

Weather was 80% of the time hot and sunny, with occassional showers.

there was an external shower (hose), internal shower, two toilets, clothes washing facilities etc. The best way to describe it, is that the place was "homely".

During the trip we had a few gear malfunctions, but nothing major and nothing that couldnt be patched up (thankfully for tearaid). We didnt have any deco incidents. But we did have some stitches needed, a couple of piercings, a couple of injections for sea sickness, and a few other cuts and bruises. Boat suitable footwear definately recommended.

The trip back was uneventful apart from a brief interruption when we bumped into some whales.

    General comments:
    a) a lot of electrics get brought by people. The living quarters therefore get crowded with electrics fighting over the few power ports.
    b) The boat has spares, but not many. Bring some with you, and leave some behind for others
    c) Facilities on the boat are "group share" expect that, and you will be fine
    d) The diving is not stressful, we had the option of Helium for the OC divers, but only in the 50-55m dives did anyone consider that helium might be of some use. Otherwise, it was generally avoided and not used apart from by the breather divers.
    e) The boat doesnt have snacks, so if you want snacks, bring them yourself. You wont need them, but hey..
    f) spirits - the same. But pack them before you get to guam, as, guam prices are RIP OFF
    g) If you wish to fish, bring some fishing lures with you. We were catching Tuna, Snapper, trevally, mackeral, dolphin fish and a whole lot more. However, a lot of lures where lost in the process.
    h) However good you are at underwater photogrophy, there will be someone there with a bigger, better and larger camera than you. You will get jealous of other peoples cinematogrophy. Some people where going under with 3 cameras...

Other then that, this trip was AWESOME.. .The wrecks are amazing, and i admit i fell in love with the Arkansas and the Prinz Eugen. The most heard comment at the end was "that wreck would be the best dive in any region of the world, apart from in Bikini.. In Bikini, that wreck is just another wreck"

Also, i would recommend doing the tour of the island. The people on the island are friendly, and its surprising as how good the facilities on the island are, and what remains of the blasts. visiting the airport remains eary however..

So in summary, this trip is awesome.. Its not luxury, but, by god its one hell of a trip... I think a few people on the boat expected more luxury, and more guidance, but, at the end, they where just enjoying the freedom to do what you want, for however long you want. As for experience level needed, a BSAC sports diver with a Sports Mixed Gas rating would surfice, or a CMAS 2* also with a trimix depth rating, or just someone with good experience of decompression diving beyond the basic fundamental level. But Depth experience of 50m dives, and 30minute decompression stops i would say is absolutely essential.

    South China Seas Expedition
    -
One week diving the famous Historical but little dived wrecks of HMS Repulse and HMS Prince of Wales in the South China Seas
May 2014 on a new Dive boat MV Giamani
    -
Jack Ingle is leading this expedition to dive some of the best wreck sites the area offers and the cost of £1770 includes full live aboard. This also includes the hire twinsets and stage cylinders (not CCR cylinders) and air.
We do carry Oxygen and Helium on board but is an extra charge.
CCR cylinders and Sofnolime are available to hire
    -
Travel arrangements can be organised as a group or can be done individually. Flights to Singapore are normally around £700.
    -
The actual dives planned will be arranged around the group of divers and will be dependent on their wishes, qualifications and experience. Please discuss this with Jack Ingle. Some of the sites available are listed below but there are many more.

HMS Repulse and Prince of Wales
These vessels were the lead players in the operation Churchill mounted to deter Japan from entering WW2. Tragically the operation went sadly wrong when Japanese torpedo bombers found the convoy and sunk both these ships with a huge loss of life. Both were Battleships, with the Prince of Wales being the larger of the two. The repulse lies on her side in a maximum depth of 55 metres with her starboard side being at 38 metres, this can be dived comfortably on air. The Prince of Wales is upside down with the deepest part of the wreck at 68 metres (props at 50 metres). The Repulse is one of the most outstanding wreck sites I have dived with the background to the tragic event and your thoughts for those very brave men who were on board this vessel when it sank.
    The Seven Skies
This is a wreck that sunk not that long ago and is sitting upright on the seabed. She is a cargo vessel and with very easy access to all decks and you can chose your depth from 20 to 60 metres. Visibility is stunning and as all dives in this part of the world water temperature is about 29 degrees Celsius. Apart from the interest of a good wreck dive this site offers stunning marine life with Manta Ray, Batfish and at the right time of year Whale Shark.
    Other sites include
The Aur tanker, The Japanese armed merchantman, Island of Tioman, Island of Aur, Island of Pemanggil, The Dutch Submarine, Maritime Fidelity, the Bangka wreck and many other wreck and reef sites.

    Hi mate,

I aint got the tools and kit with me here, as i used to just use a "friends" in australia :-( hence i can only do field repairs ie pressure adjustments etc. which is REALLY annoying.

Ive got LP creep on one of my regs, hence it needs to be taken apart, filter replaced, things tweaked etc so the easiest thing is to just give it to a shop for a week.
